cancer stuff Flashcards
cancer
disease of cell cycle resulting from uncontrolled cell division causing tumours to form
tumour
mass of cells continue to grow and divide without obvi function
benign tumour
dont effect surrounding tissue, not cancer
malignant tumour
interferes w function of surrounding tissue, cancerous
metastasis
cancer cells breaking away from orig (primary) tumour, starts new (secondary) tumour somewhere else
what happens in normal
cell divis
- dna checked so it replicates correctly and no mutations
- chem signals telling cell when to stop dividing
- neighbouring cells communicate w dividing cells to regulate growth
what happens in cancer cell divis
-dna mutations (smoking etc)
-cancer cells ignore chem signals
-cannot communicate w neighbouring cells, continue growth
-
causes of mutation
- carcinogens (environment)
- random errors in dna
- heredity (family)
what is cancer screening
checking for cancer even if no symptoms
what to do to reduce risk of cancer
- be informed about risk factors
- lifestyle choices (no smoking, healthy)
how do u diagnose cancer
- image tech
- examine cells (if cells r sus theyre examined to confirm)
what r treatments for cancer
-surgery to remove cancer tissue
-chemotherapy (drugs to stop division)
this and below also affect normal cells
-radiation (radiation to cancer site to damage dna in dividing cells)
-cord blood/bone marrow stem cells (leukemia)
