Q

What’s the difference between Loose and Dense Connective Tissue?

A

Loose Tissue has a lot more cells and more ground substance, but FEWER fibers.

Dense Tissue has more fibers, but fewer cells and ground substance.

Q

What are some types of fibers found in your connective tissues?

A

Elastin (which makes it elastic!)
Collagen (which anchors it in place…that’s the tough stuff)
Reticular (helps hold blood in place)

Q

What is Ground Substance?

A

A watery substance your cells use for fuel.

Q

What are the 3 types of Loose Tissue?

A
  1. Areolar: most common, under epithelial tissue and wrapped around organs; made of loose cells and fibers (elastin & collagen) that hold Ground Substance
  2. Adipose: fat tissue, mostly made of fat cells called adipocytes, insulates body from cold and stores extra energy for later.
  3. Reticular: like areolar, but made up of reticular fibers that holds your blood in place in your organs.

Q

What are the 3 types of Dense Tissue?

A
  1. Regular: dense, tight bundles of collagen fibers and fibroblast cells. Holds muscles to bones, etc.
  2. Irregular: thick, webbed networks of collagen fibers and cells that help in places that might get pulled in lots of directions. For instance, the dermis under your skin.
  3. Elastic: made of stretchy material for places that need to stretch and bend…like spine, blood vessels, etc.

Q

What is cartilage?

A
  1. Gristly (like what you see on the end of a chicken bone)
  2. Has no blood or nerves
  3. Strong against compression AND pulling (tension)

Q

What are the 3 types of cartilage?

A
  1. Hyalin: glassy-looking, made of sticky, starchy proteoglycans. Flexible but not stretchy (found in nose, for example)
  2. Elastic: Made of elastin fibers, strong but also stretchy (ears, for example)
  3. Fibro: Made of collagen fibers, shock absorbing (like between your spine’s vertebrae)

Q

What are the 2 types of bone tissue?

A
  1. Spongy: strong and porous, inside bones, place where marrow is made and stored for your body to make blood from.
  2. Compact: dense, no spaces, forms outside bone layers and stores calcium for making more bone tissue

Q

What makes blood a connective tissue?

A
  1. It connects parts of your body by delivering goods different places
  2. Helps some body parts be more rigid (by clotting when you get scraped, for example)

Q

What are the 3 types of blood cells?

A
  1. Erythrocytes: red cells, the delivery boys
  2. Leukocytes: larger white cells, infection fighters
  3. Platelets: small cell fragments that help blood clot

Q

How is blood different than other connective tissues?

A

It doesn’t have fibers. Instead, it has protein dissolved in the plasma that create fibers when your blood needs to clot.
