The Integumentary System Part 2 (7) Flashcards
What are CUTANEOUS SENSORY RECEPTORS?
They are parts of your nervous system found in your skin that help you sense the outside world.
Cutaneous sensory receptors are also known as WHAT?
Corpuscles!
What are the three main types of corpuscles in your skin?
- TACTILE corpuscles (feel surface sensations)
- LAMELLAR corpuscles (feel pressure)
- HAIR FOLLICLES (feel things that move your hairs breezes)
What fluid does your skin retain 5% of?
Blood!
What is VASCOCONSTRICTION?
When your skin’s blood vessels constrict on a cold day to send the blood deeper inside your body and keep your internal organs warm enough.
What is VASOLIDATION?
When your skin’s blood vessels relax again after things warm up, allowing more blood back into your skin again.
True or false: the color of your skin can tell you if something in your body is out of balance.
True!
What is another name for blue skin, and what could it indicate?
CYANOSIS
Could indicate heart failure, poor circulation, or severe respiratory issues BECAUSE oxygen-poor blood is dark and looks blue through the skin.
What is another name for yellow skin, and what could it indicate?
JAUNDICE
Could indicate a liver disorder, BECAUSE the yellow color comes from bile building up in the skin and the liver is what regulates bile.
What is another name for red skin, and what could it indicate?
ERYTHEMA
Could indicate a fever, inflammation, or allergy BECAUSE these conditions cause blood vessels in the skin to expand and let in more blood.
True or false: the easiest place to check for discoloration is actually fingernail beds or mucous membranes (like inside the mouth).
TRUE! Because these places don’t have melanin, which could make it harder to see discoloration.
What organ makes Vitamin D?
Your skin
What is the difference between the shaft and the root of a hair?
The shaft is the main part, where the cells are already dead and keratinized (like your epidermis cells!).
The root is the part inside the follicle where keratinization is still happening.
What is another word for sweat glands?
SUDORIFEROUS glands
What are the two types of SUDORIFEROUS glands?
- Eccrine (found in palms, forehead, soles of feet, etc.)
2. Apocrine glands (found in armpits and groin, “stinky”)
