Tissues part 3 (4) Flashcards
1
Q
Marfan Syndrome
A
Disease that weakens connective tissue and can be crippling or fatal
2
Q
Connective Tissue
A
What holds you together…
3
Q
What are the four major classes or connective tissue?
A
- Proper
- Cartilage
- Bone (!)
- Blood (!!)
4
Q
What are connective tissue’s 6 main jobs?
A
- binding and supporting
- protecting
- insulating
- storing reserve fluid and energy
- transporting substances
- movement
5
Q
What three factors set connective tissue apart from other tissue types?
A
- They all develop from MESENCHYME.
- Different degrees of VASCULARITY (blood flow)
- Mostly made of non-living material (EXTRACELLULAR MATRIX!
6
Q
What is MESENCHYME?
A
A loose and fluid type of embryonic tissue
7
Q
What are the two parts of the EXTRACELLULAR MATRIX?
A
- Ground Substance – a watery, rubbery unstructured material that surrounds and protects the living cells
- Fibers – provide support and structure to the otherwise shapeless Ground Substance
8
Q
What are some types of Fibers in the Extracellular Matrix?
A
- Collagen fibers (strongest and most abundant)
- Elastic fibers (flexible and stretchy, branching framework)
- Reticular fibers (short, finer collagen fibers that form nets around your organs)
9
Q
What are the three main categories of connective tissues cells?
A
- Immature (Blast) cells – they help build the matrix
- Mature (Cyte) cells – they help maintain the matrix’s heath
- Macrophages – eat bacteria, foreign materials, and dead cells
10
Q
Which kind of fiber does Marfan Syndrome target?
A
Elastic Fibers…including the ones supporting the heart and aorta, which can be dangerous!
