Tissues: Muscle and Nerve Flashcards
Muscle tissue overview
function is to contract to enable movements
muscle cells are called muscle fibers
cells contain myofilaments (contain actin and myosin)
skeletal, cardiac, and smooth
skeletal muscle
long, cylindrical cells, multinucleate, striated (strips of myofilaments)
function: voluntary movement, manipulation of environment, facial expression
location: attached to bones (occasionally to skin i.e. the face)
cardiac muscle
striated, short branching cells, generally uninucleate, cells join at intercalated discs (gap junctions)
functions: contracts to propel blood into circulatory system
location: walls of the heart
smooth muscle
spindle cells with central nuclei, no striations
function: propels substances along internal passageways, involuntary control
location: walls of hollow organs
Nervous Tissue
function: transmit electrical signals between cells
communication (sensory info/input ; motor movement/output)
location: brain, spinal chord, nerves
neurons - generate and conduct nerve impulses
neuroglia- support neurons
