Tissues Epithelial Flashcards
Consists of closely packed, flattened cells that make up he inside or outside lining of body areas.
Epithelial
Avascular (no blood vessels). Waste exchange occurs through neighboring connective tissues
Tissue
Is exposed to the outside of the body or to an internal body cavity
Upper Surface
Covers the outside surfaces of the body and also lines the internal organs
Covering and lining epithelium
Secretes hormones
Glandular epithelium
Flat. Have the appearance of a fried egg
Squamous Cells
Cube or hexagon shaped.
Cuboidal Cells
Tall and thick. Serve to protect underlying tissues or to absorb substances
Columnar Cells
Refers to a single layer of cells
Simple Epithelium
Refers to epithelium consisting of multiple layers
Stratified Epithelium
Refers to a single layer or cells of different sizes
Pseudostratified Epithelium
Secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream
Endocrine Glands
Secrete their substance into tubes which carry the secretions to the epithelial surface
Exocrine Glands
