Chapter 1 Flashcards
Matter
Any substance in the universe that has mass or occupies space
Atoms
Building blocks of all matter
Element
A term used to describe atoms that contain the same number of protons
Isotopes
The number of neutrons in atoms of an element can be variable
Atomic Mass
Sum of the masses of an atom protons and neutrons
Constant
The number of protons in atoms of an element
Radioactive Isotopes
Unstable isotopes that occur when the ratio of neutrons to protons in atoms of an element are not ideal
Radioactive Decay
Atoms will eventually reconfigure their nucleus in order to achieve a more stable ratio
Half-Life
The time it takes for 1/2 (half) of the amount of radioactive isotopes in a sample to decay
Valence Electrons
The electrons in the outer shell
Electron Shells
Energy levels from when electrons within an atom possesses discrete amounts of energy based upon their distance from the nucleus
Orbits
Contains negatively charged electrons circling the nucleus
Atomic Number
The number of protons found in the nucleus the atom.
