Tissues Flashcards
Name the four types of tissues
Nervous, muscle, epithelial, connective
Nervous Tissue
sense stimuli and send electrical impulses through the body. Made up of neurons and glial cells
Neurons
building blocks that generate and conduct electrical nerve impulses. Consists of cell body, dendrites and axon
Cell body
has nucleus, mitochondria and DNA. Neuron’s life support
Dendrite
Collect signals from other cells
Axon
carries messages to other neurons, muscles and cells
Glial cells
provide support, insulation and protection
Muscle tissue
contract and move. Well vascularised.
Skeletal tissue
pull on bones and skin to make you move
Cardiac tissue
forms wall of heart, propels blood through circulatory system.
Smooth tissue
lines walls of blood vessels and some organs.
Epithelial tissue
organises your body
Proper epithelium
covers and lines your inner and outer body
Glandular epithelium
forms your glands and secrets hormones and other substances
Squamous cells
flat, fast absorption and diffusion.
Cuboidal cells
absorb nutrients and produce secretions
Columnar cells
cushion underlying tissues. Absorb nutrients and produce secretions
Endocrine glands
secrete hormones right into your bloodstream or to nearby cells
Exocrine glands
secrete their juices into tubes or ducts that lead to outside the body
Four types of connective tissue
Proper, cartilage, bone and blood
Immature (blast) cells
stem cells still forming
