System Functions Flashcards
Integumentary System
regulates body temperature, protects body, eliminates wastes, helps to make vitamin D, detects sensations, stores fat and provides insulation
Skeletal System
supports and protects body, assists with movement, stores cells that produce blood cells, specific area for muscle attachment and stores mineral and lipids
Muscular System
participates in body movement, maintains posture and produces heat
Nervous System
Regulates body activity through nerve impulses by detecting changes in the environment, interpreting them and then responding through muscular contraactions
Endocrine System
Regulates body activity hormones transported by the blood to various target organs
Cardiovascular System
heart pumps blood through blood vessels, blood carries oxygen and nutrients to cells and carbon dioxide and waste away from cells, helps regulate acidity, temperature and water content of body fluids and the blood components help defend against disease and mend damaged vessels
Lymphatic System
returns proteins and fluids to blood, carries lipids from gastrointestinal tract to blood and contains sites of maturation and proliferation of B and T cells
Respiratory System
transfers oxygen and carbon dioxide, helps to regulate acidity of body fluids and the air flowing out of lungs through vocal cords produces sounds
Digestive System
physical and chemical breakdown of food, absorbs nutrients and eliminates solid wastes
Urinary System
produces, stores and eliminates urine, eliminates waste, regulates volume and chemical composition of blood, helps regulate acid-base balance of body fluids, maintains body’s mineral balance and helps to regulate red blood cell production
Reproductive System
gonads produce gametes which unite to form a new organism, associated organs transport and store gametes and mammary glands produce milk
