Tissues Flashcards
Tissues
A group of closely associated cells that perform related functions and are similar in structure
Histology
The study of tissue
Function
Four basic types of tissue
Epithelium
Covering, sheet of cells that covers a body surface or lines a body cavity ; also form most of the body’s gland
Connective tissue
Support
Muscle tissue
Movement
Nervous tissue
Control
Functions
Protects underlying tissues, absorbs, makes up glands that secrete, and makes up sweat glands that excrete
Epithelial
Cells are anchored to each other and to underlying tissues by a specialized membrane called the basement membrane
Squamous
Flat, irregular shaped. Line the heart, blood, and lymphatic vessels, body cavities, and lungs
Cuboidal
Cubed-shaped cells that line the kidney tubules and cover the ovaries and secretory parts of certain glands
Columnar
Y’all and rectangular, they line the ducts, digestive tract (mainly intestinal and stomach lining), parts of the respiratory tract, and glands
Simple
One cell layer, found in capillaries, in the lungs, and in the loop of Henle in the kidney tubules
Stratified
More than one layer of cells, lines our mouth and throat and as the outer surface of our skin
Pseudostratified
Several layers, all cells extend from the basement membrane to the outer surface or free surface of the cells, found in the throat, trachea, and bronchi of the lungs
Transitional
Several layers of closely packed, flexible and easily stretched cells, lines the pelvis of the kidney, the ureters, the urinary bladder, and the upper part of the urethra
Mucous membranes
Protects, absorbs nutrients, and secretes mucus, enzymes, and bile salts
Glandular
Forms glands, there are 2 types:
Exocrine and Endocrine
Exocrine glands
Glands allow external secretion onto body surfaces (skin) or into body cavities
Endocrine glands
Ductless glands they secrete hormones which are carried by blood to target organs
Endothelium
Lines the circulatory system with a single layer of squamous type cells
Mescothelium
Also called serous tissue lines the cavities of the body that have no opening to the outside
