Parts Of The Eye👁 Flashcards
Sensory layer of the retina
Made up of rods and cones
Rods
More abundant and function in dim light because they are sensitive to light
Cones
Produce color vision and they require lots of light, because they’re not sensitive to light
3 different types of cones
Red, green, blue
Macula lutea
Yellow spot in the center of the retina
Fovea centrallis
The center depression of the macula lutea, this area produces the sharpest vision
Optic disk
Nerve fibers leave the eye from this structure as the optic nerve, the optic disk has no receptors so it’s called the blind spot
Rhodopsin
When it’s exposed to light it breaks down into a protein called opsin and a pigment called retinal
Retinal requires
Vitamins A
Cornea
Where light rays enter the eyes
Pupil
A round hole that the rays pass through
Iris
Opens and closes to regulate the amount of light passing through
Light rays
Pass through the lens and change shape to bend the rays and focus them on the retina at the back of the eye
Retina
Thin layer at the back of the eye that has millions of tiny light sensing nerve cells called rods and cones and are named for their distinct shapes
Photoreceptor cells
Convert the light into electrical impulses
