Tissues Flashcards
Epithelial tissue
Function
- protection from dehydration
- low friction surfaces
Types of epithelial tissue (3)
Squamous - flat, squished cells that line the mouth, skin, digestive track, etc.
Columnar - tall like columns. Contains cilia on their edges to sweep out dust and debris from respiratory passages and nose
Cuboidal - cube-shaped cells that line blood vessels and ducts
Connective and supporting
Function
- support
- insulation
Types of connective and supporting tissue (6)
Bone - strong like a tree’s trunk to support body
Ligament - tough but flexible to join bone to bone
Adipose - fatty tissue that cushions and supports internal organs
Tendon - tough but flexible to connect muscle to bone
Cartilage - tough but flexible and spongy, found in ears, nose, trachea
Blood cells – RBCs: they lack a nucleus at maturity to increase surface area to increase 02 capacity
WBCs: to fight infection
Platelets: small and sticky to clot blood and prevent bleeding
Muscle tissue
Function
-long and contractile to move bones and organs
Types of muscle tissue (3)
Skeletal/straightahead – moves bones, voluntary
Cardiac – moves heart, involuntary
Smooth - moves stomach, intestines, involuntary
Nervous tissue
Function
- sensory
- branched for communication with other cells and organs
- coordination of body functions
Types of nervous tissue (1)
Neuron - main cell type
