Cells And Microscopes Flashcards
Cell theory
- All living things are composed of one or more cells
- the cell is the basic structural and functional unit of living matter
- all cells come from pre-existing cells
Level/hierarchy of structure
Cells ➡️ tissues ➡️ organs ➡️ systems ➡️ organisms
the simplest level is the cell and the most complex level is the organism
Stage
Supports microscope slide and has central opening to allow light to pass through specimen on slide
Clips
Hold the slide in position on the stage
Revolving nose piece
Holds objective lenses and rotates allowing lenses to be changed
Diaphragm
Controls the amount of light that reaches specimen
Objective lenses
Magnify the object and have three possible magnifications
- Low = 4X
- Medium = 10X
- High = 40X
Course adjustment knob
Used with low-power object is only (for rough focus)
Fine adjustment knob
Used with all objective lenses. For sharp focus
Characteristics of living things (6)
- Movement
- growth and reproduction
- metabolism and waste production
- Response to stimuli
- maintenance and repair
- complexity
