Tissues Flashcards
What are tissues?
Tissues can be defined as collections of similar cells that perform specific functions
What are the 4 categories of tissue?
- epithelial tissue
- connective tissue
- muscle tissue
- nervous tissue
What is the function of the epithelial tissue?
Cover the exterior surfaces of the body, line internal cavities and passageways, and form certain glands
What is the function of the connective tissue?
Binds the cells and organs of the body together
What is the function of the muscle tissue?
Contracts forcefully when excited, providing movement
What is the function of the nervous tissue?
Also excitable, allowing for the generation and propagation of electrochemical signals in the form of nerve impulses that communicate between different regions of the body
What are the 3 types of epithelial cells?
- squamous
- cuboidal
- columnar
What are the properties for squamous?
Thin and flat cells
What are the properties for cuboidal?
Short cylindrical cells, which appear hexagonal in cross-section
What are the properties for columnar?
Long or column-like cylindrical cells, which have nucleus present at the base
Describe simple epithelium
It is composed of one layer of a cell and mostly has a secretory or an absorptive function
Describe compound epithelium
It is made up of two or more than two layers of cells and mostly has a protective function
Describe the glandular epithelium
Is made up of cuboidal or columnar cells. They are specialised for secretion
What does unicellular mean?
Isolated glandular cells, e.g. goblet cells
What does multicellular mean?
A cluster of cells, e.g. salivary glands
What are the 3 types of muscle tissue?
- skeletal muscle tissue
- smooth muscle tissue
- cardiac muscle tissue
What is skeletal muscle tissue?
Muscle fibres are cylindrical, multinucleated, striated and under voluntary control
What is smooth muscle tissue?
Cells are spindle shaped, have a single, centrally located nucleus, and lack striations. They are called involuntary muscles
What is cardiac muscle tissue?
Has branching fibres, one nucleus per cell, striations and intercalated disks. It’s contraction is not under voluntary control
