Tissue types and their descriptions Flashcards
The 2 functions of epithelial tissue
- provide covering (like skin tissue)
- produce secretions (like glandular tissue)
form of epithelial tissue
exists commonly in sheets and doesn’t have its own blood supply
without its own blood supply; what epithelial tissue dependent on?
diffusion from nearby capillaries for food and O2
epithelial tissue are classified according to what 2 criteria?
- # of cell layers
- cell shape
how do simple and stratified epithelial tissues vary?
- # of cells layers
- simple has 1 layer of cells and found in body structures where absorption, secretion, and filtration occur
- stratified has more than 1 layer and serves as protection
Shapes of epithelial tissue
- squamous
- cuboidal
- columnar
where is connective tissue found?
throughout the body
what does connective tissue do?
serves to connect different structures of the body
does connective tissue have its own blood supply?
-commonly yes it has its own blood supply except some types like ligaments that do not
Various types of connective tissue include?
- bone
- cartilage
- adipose (fat)
- blood vessel
What is muscle tissue dedicated to?
producing movement
what are the 3 types of muscle tissue?
- skeletal
- cardiac
- smooth
what does skeletal muscle tissue do?
supports voluntary movement since its connected to bones in the skeletal system
(voluntary movements are consciously controlled by the brain)
what type of control is smooth muscle under? where is it found?
- involuntary control
- found in walls of hollow organs such as; intestines, blood vessels, bladder, uterus
cardiac muscle is under which control and found where?
- involuntary
- only in the heart
