Respiratory System Flashcards
Respiratory system does what?
provides for air exchange & supplies tissues with oxygenated blood
lungs
breathes in O2 and exhales CO2
process of air exchange
air inhaled through nose & trachea > passes into R & L bronchial tubes (where cilia keep airway clear) > air travels to alveoli (O2 & CO2 exchanged) > O2 transported to RBCs into bloodstream
How does the body work to process air exchange?
diaphragm contracts to pull air into lungs upon inspiration when the diaphragm relaxes CO2 is forced outside of body through expiration
how does pulmonary function decrease?
- age
- smoking
- exposure to pollutants & irritating chemicals
how do we maintain pulmonary function?
(normal aging process is unavoidable)
- exercising & keeping active
- avoid smoking, pollutants & chemical exposures
what are cilia, where are they located?
cilia are tiny hairs in the bronchial tubes that keep airway clear by removing unwanted matter from the lungs
what are alveoli?
tiny air sacs surrounded by capillaries
