Tissue Test Flashcards
Define tissues
Groups of similar cells that perform a specialized function.
Define basement membrane
A layer of extracellular matrix that anchors epithelial tissue to underlying connective tissue
Define extracellular matrix
Molecules that fill spaces between cells, consisting mostly of protein fiber networks.
Define macrophages
also called histiocytes, they are large phagocytic cells
Function and Location of Simple Squamous Epithelium
Function: Filtration, diffusion, osmosis; covers surface
Location: Air sacs of the lungs, walls of capillaries, linings of blood and lymph vessels
Function and Location of Simple cuboidal epithelium
Function: Secretion, absorption
Location: Surface of ovaries, linings of kidney tubules, and linings of ducts of certain glands
Function and Location of Simple Columnar Epithelium
Function: Absorption, secretion, protection
Location: Linings of uterus, stomach, and intestines
Function and Location of Pseudostratified columnar epithelium
Function: Protection, secretion, movement of mucus
Location: Linings of respiratory passages
Function and Location of Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Function: Protection
Location: Outer layer of skin, linings of oral cavity, throat, vagina, anal canal
Function and Location of Stratified cuboidal epithelium
Function: protection
Location: Linings of larger ducts of mammary glands , sweat glands, salivary glands, and pancreas
Function and Location of Stratified Columnar Epithelium
Function: Protection, Secretion
Location: Part of the male urethra and part of the pharynx
Function and Location of Transitional epithelium
Function: Distensibility, protection
Location: Inner lining of urinary bladder and linings of ureters and part of urethra
Function and Location of Glandular Epithelium
Function: Secretion
Location: Salivary glands, sweat glands, endocrine glands
Define fibroblasts
Cells that produce fibers in connective tissue
Function and Location of Collagenous fibers
Function: hold structure together with great tensile strength
Location: in components of body parts that hold structures together, like ligaments which connect bones to bones and tendons which connect muscle to bones
Function and Location of Elastic fibers
Function: Stretch easily
Location:
common in body parts that are frequently stretched, such as the vocal cords.
Function and Location of Reticular fibers
Function: Lend delicate support
Location: form delicate supporting networks in a variety of tissues, like the spleen
Function and Location of Loose connective tissue (Areolar tissue)
Function: Binds organs, holds tissue fluids
Location: Beneath skin, between muscles, beneath epithelial tissues
Function and Location of Loose connective tissue (adipose tissue)
Function: Protects, insulates, stores fat
Location: Beneath skin, around kidneys, behind eyeballs, on surface of heart
Function and Location of Reticular connective tissue
Function: supports
Location: Walls of liver and spleen
Function and Location of Dense connective tissue
Function: Binds organs
Location: Tendons, ligaments, deeper layers of skin
Function and Location of Hyaline cartilage
Function: Supports, protects, provides framework
Location: Nose, ends of bones, rings in the walls of respiratory passages
Function and Location of Elastic Cartilage
Function: Supports, protects, provides flexible framework
Location: Framework of external ear and parts of the larynx
Function and Location of Fibrocartilage
Function: Supports, protects, absorbs shock
Location: Between bony parts of spinal column, parts of pelvic girdle and knee
Function of Bone
Supports protects, provides framework
Function of Blood
Transports substances, helps maintain stable internal environment
Define muscle fibers
muscle tissue cells
What are striations?
a series of ridges, furrows, or linear marks
What are intercalated discs?
Membranous boundary between cardiac muscle cells
Function and Location of Skeletal muscle tissue
Striated or Not?
Function: Voluntary movements of skeletal parts
Location: Muscles usually attached to bones
Striated
Function and Location of Smooth Muscle Tissue
Striated or not?
Function: Involuntary movements of internal organs
Location: Walls of hollow internal organs.
Lacks Striations
Function and Location of Cardiac Muscle Tissue
Striated or not?
Function: Heart Movements
Location: Heart Muscle
Striated
Define neurons
A specialized cell transmitting nerve impulses; a nerve cell.
Define neuroglial cells
specialized cells of the nervous system that produce myelin, communicate between cells, maintain the ionic environment, and nurture the differentiation of neurons.
Function and Location of Nervous Tissue
Function: Sensory reception and conduction of nerve impulses
Location: Brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves
Define osteocytes
mature bone cells
Define lacunae
hollow cavities; spaces in bone
What are red blood cells?
a formed element of blood
What are white blood cells?
a formed element of blood
What is plasma (blood)?
fluid extracellular matrix where the formed elements are suspended in. Fluid portion of circulating blood.
