Tissue overview Flashcards
What are the three types of muscle tissue?
Skeletal muscle
Smooth Muscle
Cardiac Muscle
General function of muscle tissue?
Movement/motion
Function of skeletal muscle?
Voluntary movement
Attached to bone
Function of smooth muscle?
Involuntary movement
Moves food through the digestive system
Function of cardiac muscle?
Involuntary movement. Has intercalated discs, sends impulses to contract the heart.
Requires other systems to enable their function - can not function alone
4 characteristics of muscle?
ECEEA
Excitability (receives and responds to stimuli)
Contractability (contracts and shortens)
Extensibility (ability to stretch without damage)
Elasticity (returns to original shape)
Adaptability (it can be changed in response to how its used)
What is nervous tissue?
The body main control system.
Consists of the CNS and network of nerds that extend from CNS to rest of body.
CNS?
The central nervous system
The brain and spinal cord
What is the peripheral nervous system?
The remainder of the nervous system
Consists of nerves
What are the cranial nerves?
12 pairs of nerves that branch from the brain. Part of the PNS
What are the spinal nerves?
31 pairs of nerves that branch from the spinal cord. Part of PNS
3 key points of nervous tissue
Contains nerve cells called neurones
Transmits messages (nerve impulses)
Messages pass from inside/outside the body to the tissues
Definition of tissue?
Organisation of cells that act together and form a common function
4 main kinds of tissue?
Epithelial
Connective
Muscle
Nervous
Shape of epithelial tissue?
Simple shape
Fit closely together
