Cellular Structure Flashcards
What are cells?
The basic structural building blocks of the human body
What are the 3 main structures of cells?
Cell membrane
Cytoplasm
Nucleus
What are organelles?
Structures within the cells that have specific functions
What is the cell membrane?
The outer surrounding which forms a barrier between cell contents and the external environment
Is semi permeable
What is the nucleus?
Largest cell structure
Controls all cellular activities
Contains DNA
What is the cytoplasm?
The liquid within the cell
What is mitochondria?
Rod shaped structures with enzymes that break down glucose to form energy
The powerhouse of the cell
What are ribosomes?
Contain ribonucleic acid
Manufacture enzymes and proteins for cell use and exportation
What is the endoplasmic reticulum?
A network within the cells to offer support
Channels transport substances within the cell
Rough endoplasmic reticulum has ribosomes, produces proteins and enzymes
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum produces steroids and phospholipids
What is Golgi apparatus?
Similar to SER in structure
Vesicles contain collagen, protein, enzymes, lipids and mucus.
Produces collagen and mucus
What are lysosomes?
Powerful enzymes that break down bacteria and destroy damaged cell tissue
