Systems Flashcards
How many systems are there?
11
What are the 11 major organ systems?
Circulatory Respiratory Digestive Excretory Nervous Endocrine Lymphatic Reproductive Urinary Skeletal Muscular
What is the structure and function of the integumentary system?
S = Skin, hair and nails forming the body outer covering
F = Acts as a barrier to protect the body from the environment
What is the structure and function of the skeletal system?
S = Axial and appendicular skeleton, joints, cartilage and tendons
F = Framework that supports, protects and facilitates movement
What is the structure and function of the muscular system?
S = Layers of muscle that cover bones of the skeleton
F = Contract and relax to produce movement
What is the structure and function of the circulatory system?
S = heart and blood vessels
F = Transports oxygen and nutrients to the body dells and removes waste products
What is the structure and function of the lymphatic system?
S = lymph fluid, lymph vessels, lymph nodes and the spleen
F = Fights infection by filtering harmful bacteria and waste
What is the structure and function of the nervous system?
S = CNS is the body main control system. Consists of brain and the spinal cord, peripheral nervous system and the sense organs
F = Fast communication system in body and between body and external stimuli.
What is the structure and function of the digestive system?
S = Mouth, oesophagus, pancreas, liver, gall bladder, stomach, small and large intestine
F = Breaks down food, absorbs nutrients, eliminates waste
What is the structure and function of the respiratory system?
S = Centred on lungs. Also includes nasal cavities, mouth, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and lungs
F = Gaseous exchange between body and environment, oxygen into the blood, removal of CO2
What is the structure and function of the urinary system?
S = Kidneys, bladder, ureters and urethera
F = Makes, stores and eliminates urine
What is the structure and function of the endocrine system?
S = Pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, hypothalamus, adrenal, islets of langerhans, ovaries and testes
F = Slow communication system to regulate body functions. Can control growth, energy production etc
What is the structure and function of the reproductive system?
S = sex organs
F = work together for the purpose of sexual reproduction
