Exercise Physiology System Flashcards

1
Q

Basic overview of the cellular respiration process?

A

Respiration converts food energy into Adenosine Tri-Phosphate (ATP)

It does this using oxygen

Q

What happens to respiration during exercise?

A

The supply and demand of oxygen available to muscle cells is effected by the duration and intensity of the individuals exercise as well as their level of fitness.

Q

What is the ATP-PCr System?

A

The most immediate energy source available.

Anaerobic in nature.

Uses Creatine Phosphate to produce ATP.

This immediate energy is only used for a brief, high intensity burst up to 10 seconds because muscles only store limited amounts of CP and ATP

Q

What is the glycolytic system?

A

Anaerobic in nature

Along with ATP-PCr it dominates as a source of energy production in early stages of high intensity

ATP is produced through breakdown of glycogen/glucose (glygolysis)

This provides enough energy for high intensity (1-3 mins in duration)

Fatigue will occur due to accumulation of H+ ions. Without presence of O, H+ cannpt be removes = muscle cells become more acidic

Q

What is the aerobic glycolysis system?

A

The oxidative system (aerobic)

The most complex of the systems. Relies on the breakdown of muscle glycogen, blood glucose, plasma free fatty acids and stored intramuscular fats to produce ATP.

High yield of energy

Q

When will fatigue arise during the aerobic system?

A

When all available muscle glycogen and sugars have been used and transport of oxygen is insufficient.thus halting ATP production
