Tissue and Organs Flashcards
What do multicellular organisms contain?
Differentiated cells adapted for different functions.
What is tissue?
A group of specialised cells that have a similar structure and function.
Name three different types of tissue and their function.
Glandular tissue - Produces substances such as enzymes and hormones.
Muscular tissue - Contracts, bringing about movement,
Epithelial tissue - Covers some parts of the body.
What does the thyroid gland do?
Produces thyroxine, which controls the rate of metabolism.
What do the ovaries do?
Produces oestrogen which cause the changes at puberty and helps control the menstrual cycle.
What do the testes do?
Produces testosterone which causes changes at puberty and stimulates sperm production.
What does the pancreas do?
Produces insulin which controls the blood sugar levels.
What do the adrenal glands do?
Produces adrenaline which prepares the body for rapid activity by increasing the heart rate and level of sugar in blood by diverting blood to the brain and muscles.
What does the brain do?
Contains a sensitive centre called the hypothalamus which controls the pituitary gland.
What is the function of muscular tissue?
To churn the food and other contents of the stomach.
What is the function of epithelial tissue?
To cover the inner and outer surfaces of the stomach.
What is the function of glandular tissue?
To produce digestive juices including acid and enzymes.
Organ, cell, organ system and tissue.
Put these in order.
Cell, Tissue, Organ and Organ system.
What is the function of the pancreas and the salivary glands?
Produce digestive juices.
What is the function of the stomach?
Digests food.
