Photosynthesis Flashcards
Explain the process of photosynthesis.
Green plants absorb light energy using chlorophyll in their leaves. They use it to react carbon dioxide with water to make a sugar called glucose. The glucose is used in respiration, or converted into starch and stored. Oxygen is produced as a by-product.
What can limit the rate of photosynthesis?
Temperature, carbon dioxide and light intensity.
What do plants need for healthy growth?
Mineral ions including nitrate and magnesium.
What is photosynthesis?
The chemical change that happens in the leaves of green plants.
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide + water (+ light energy) → glucose + oxygen
What is a by-product of photosynthesis?
Oxygen.
How do plants absorb water and carbon dioxide?
Plants absorb water through their roots, and carbon dioxide through their leaves. Some glucose is used for respiration, while some is converted into insoluble starch for storage. The stored starch can later be turned back into glucose and used in respiration.
How does light intensity affect the rate of photosynthesis?
Without enough light, a plant cannot photosynthesis very quickly, even if there is plenty of water and carbon dioxide. Increasing the light intensity will increase the rate of photosynthesis.
How does carbon dioxide affect the rate of photosynthesis?
Sometimes photosynthesis is limited by the concentration of carbon dioxide in the air. Even if there is plenty of light, a plant cannot photosynthesise if there is insufficient carbon dioxide.
How does the temperature affect the rate of photosynthesis?
If it gets too cold, the rate of photosynthesis will decrease. Plants cannot photosynthesise if it gets too hot.
How can farmers maximise growth?
They may use artificial light so that plant can continue to photosynthesise beyond daylight hours.
Why is nitrate needed for healthy growth in plants?
For making amino acids, which are needed to make proteins.
Why is magnesium needed or healthy growth in plants?
For making chlorophyll.
What happens if plants are deficient in nitrate?
It will suffer rom stunted growth.
What happens if plants are deficient in magnesium?
It’s leaves will turn yellow.
