Tissue Flashcards
What are the four types of body tissue?
Epithelial, Connective, Muscle and Nervous
What is body tissue?
A group of similar cells that function together to carry out specialised activities
What is the microscopic study of the tissues of the body called?
Histology
What is epithelial tissue? What are its major functions?
Covers body surface, lines hollow organs + tubes + cavities + ducts
Protects, filters, secretes, absorbes and excretes
What is connective tissue? What are it major functions?
Cells in a matrix of fibres of collagen and elastic fibres in a ground substance (gel like substance surrounding the fibres)
Connects, supports, binds, or separates other tissues or organs
What is muscles? What is its major function?
Contractive cells
Generate movement
What is nervous tissue? What is its major function?
Conducting nerve cells and supportive neuroglia (supporting cells for neurons)
Detects changes and generates nerve impulses
