Bitter quarrel between York and Somerset at noble council. The Nevilles supported York, however there was government resistance

York’s ally, Norfolk, charged Somerset with treason and he was placed in the Tower of London. Devon, who had been held since the Coup in Dartford, was released

Queen Margaret, York and Henry Holland (Duke of Exeter) each made a claim in parliament to be regent (protector)

Cardinal Kemp, the chancellor, dies. Government resistance to York was ended
27 March 1454
York was formally made protector

Duke of Exeter and his Percy allies attacked properties of York and the Neville’s in the North. York captured Exeter in June and the Percy leaders were captured in the ‘Battle’ of Stamford Bridge on 1 November 1454
