Time Outs Flashcards

1
Q

Pause and Revisit

A

If emotions escalate, gently suggest pausing the conversation to return to it when you’re both calm.

Example:
“I can see how upset we both are. I want to talk about this, but I think we might need a little time to calm down so we can really hear each other. Can we revisit this later?”

Calmly but firmly enforce a pause when needed.

“I want to have this conversation, but I’m too upset to respond well. I need a short break, and then we’ll continue.”

Q

Practice self soothing

A

Focus on deep breathing or grounding exercises when you feel emotions rising.

Try counting your breaths (e.g., inhale for four counts, exhale for six) or use a calming mantra like, “Stay steady, stay present.”
