Tides Flashcards
Spring tide
When the moon, sun and earth are in a straight line.
High tide
The moon pulling the ocean towards it
Low tides
Lowest parts of the water
Neap tides
Moon and sun are at 90degrees to each other
Macro/meso/micro
Macrotidal- more than 4m difference between high and low tide
Mesotidal- 2-4m difference between high and low
Microtidal- less than 2m difference between high and low.
What is storm surge?
Low pressure weather system causes a localised rise in sea level
High winds push low pressure area towards land
High winds also cause additional strong waves
As the low pressure area and raised area of sea moves towards land, it is forced up river estuaries into narrow bays
This coincides with high spring tide, the impacts are particularly hazardous
