Coastal Formations Flashcards
Geo
Narrow steep sided inlet
Cracks and joints are attacked by the sea, causing the cracks to widen
Blowhole
Gap in the headland where sea water is pushed out
Formed when erosion is vertically upwards, and connects with weathered rock from the top of the cliff.
Swash and drift aligned beaches
Swash aligned- sediment moves up and down the beach with little lateral transfer
Drift aligned- sediment is transferred along the coast by long shore drift
Spits
Prevailing wind carries sediment along the coast, as the coastline changes direction the shingle becomes deposited, storms build up more material at the high water mark
Barrier islands
Barrier islands have a series of dune ridges on their seaward face
Barrier beach
A beach or spit extends across a bay to join two headlands, it forms a barrier beach.
Ria
Sheltered winding inlets with irregular shorelines. Dendritic pattern, rias are deepest at the mouth.
River valleys are created in the interglacial period, when the ice melts, the valleys flood.
Fjord
When glaciers advance down river valleys, they erode the sides and bottom of the valley, creating a v shaped valley. Glaciers bulldoze sediment down the coast, creating a threshold a ridge of sediment at the coast.
Marine platform
The marine platform is rock ie and old wave cut platform
Raised beach
Raised beach is formed of marine sediments deposited when sea levels were higher
