Erosion Flashcards
Hydraulic action
A wave attack on a cliff or platform edge exerts hydraulic pressure and forces air and water into cracks in the rock
Wave quarrying
Removal of rocks and other debris on cliff or wave cut platforms from their original position by waves
Cavitation
When there is intense erosion due to surface collapse of air bubbles found in rapid flows of water. The implosion of the bubble causes a jet of water to travel with high pressure and out stress on an area.
Corrosion
Sand and pebbles hurled against the cliff foot by the power of the waves, chipping away at rock
Abrasion
Also known as sandpapering as sediment is dragged up and back over the shoreline in the swash and backwash
Solution
Weak acids in seawater dissolved alkaline rock
Attrition
Smaller particles being made via impact and abrasion of other rocks
