TIC Flashcards
How the TIC works
a. Infrared energy is produce by all objects and is based on temperature.
b. Measures infrared energy and converts it into black (cold objects) and white (hot objects). The brighter the hotter. New models have color palettes.
c. Has the ability to measure temperature differences of 0.05F
Uses of the TIC
a. Primary search
b. Locating the seat of the fire
c. Overhaul
d. Ventilation
e. Location of plume (HAZMAT ops)
f. Fluid levels in tanks/drums/vessels
g. Non-fire rescue activities
i. Swift water rescue
ii. Auto-ejections
h. Overheated wires, ballasts, circuits, etc.
i. Breaching walls (identifies grout cells)
TFD TIC SOG’s
a. Does not allow firefighters to deviate from currently established safety practices
b. Keep the TIC close to the mask to assist with clear vision (dark, heavy smoke can obscure the screen)
c. Should not be used in temperatures above 800F for more than 2 minutes
i. Can cause white out
ii. Can cause dead firefighters….
d. If the TIC is exposed to heat above 250F for 10min, there will be a loss of picture quality and clarity.
e. Periodic reality checks should be done to observe changing fire conditions
f. Six sided approach should be used
i. ^check all 4 walls, the ceiling and the floor
ii. Don’t let the fire sneak around you!
g. When looking at a mirror or glass, you will see a reflection of yourself
h. An object submerged in water will give off the ambient water temp and therefore you will not be able to see the object
i. Can alter depth perception (especially if you are in 2x mode). Use caution when on the stairs.
j. Not to be used as a forcible entry tool.
k. Not intrinsically safe
Maintenance of TIC
a. Clean with rag, mild detergent, and warm water
b. Check battery terminals. Clean with terminal cleaner.
c. Check hinges, seals, and carrying strap before and after use.
d. There are no serviceable parts. Any repairs must be made by manufacturer or maintenance staff.
e. Never point at the sun.
MSA Evolution 5000 series
a. Newest versions are 5000, 5200HD and 5800.
b. Operates nearly the same way as the 4000
c. Smaller, lighter, and has a longer battery life
d. On all front line trucks.
Where do I charge/find the TIC?
The TIC is charged/located by the FF seat behind the engineer.
TIC on/off button
i. Press and hold for 1sec to turn on
ii. Press and hold for 4sec to turn off
iii. Press and hold for 2sec to go into standby mode
iv. To exit standby, press any button
v. Automatically shuts down after 15min of standby mode
LED lights on the TIC
Thermometer
Power mode indicator
Battery strength indicator
If all the lights are flashing, you haz beeeeeg problems….
Thermometer lights on the TIC
- Flashing Red if TIC exceeds normal operating temperatures
a. Let’s face it: if the TIC shouldn’t be in there, then neither should you!!! - Remove TIC and allow to cool if this occurs.
Power mode indicator light on the TIC
Green=on
Battery Strength indicator lights on TIC
- Green=full charge
- Yellow=15min left
- Red=less than 15
- Flashing red= going off now
TIC on screen indicators
i. Low sensitivity mode/firefighting mode indicator
ii. Shutter indicator
iii. Quick temp indicator and digital temp scale
iv. 2x digital zoom
LoTemp vs HiTemp modes
i. Normal mode (0-320F) has high sensitivity due to the low temperature
ii. Firefighting mode (320-1050F) low sensitivity due to the high temperature.
iii. Automatically switches to firefighting mode when the temperatures read above 320F and goes up to 1050F.
Heat indicators
i. Quick Temp indicator
ii. Temperature gauge will read from 0-320F in normal mode
iii. Gauge will read 0-1050F in firefighting mode
Heat seeking mode
i. Shows hotter areas in yellow to dark red color
ii. Normal is 257-297-320
iii. FF 845-914-1020
Works in White Hot, Black Hot, and Fire and Ice modes.
