What are 2 types of thyroxin?
T3 - triiodothyronine
T4 - thyroxin
What does thyroxin do the the body?
Regulates metabolism - speeds it up
What does thyroxin stimulate?
Stimulates cells
What does stimulating the cells with thyroxin do? (3)
cells to increase oxygen and amino acid uptake
Increases fat metabolism in cells
(Cells burn energy and divide)
What is thyroxin based on?
Iodine
What causes hyperthyroidism?
Over production of thyroxin
What are the symptoms of hyperthyroidism? (8)
Weight loss High blood pressure Increase heart rate Low blood sugar levels Irregular heartbeat Excessive sweating Diarrhea Increase body temperature (heat sensitive)
What is expothalmos?
Is an auto-immune problem
Edema- Fluid buildup causing the eyes to bulge
Increase in anxiety
What is goiter?
Thyroid swells
Increase in appetite
What causes hyporthyroidism?
The under production of thyroxin
What are symptoms of hypothyroidism?
Weight gain Fatigue Increase appetite Hair loss Decrease in body temperature (cold sensitive) Increase in apathy (don't care) Mentally thuggish (slow)

What does calcitonin regulate?
Calcium levels in the blood
How does calcitonin regulate calcium levels?
Increases the movement of calcium into bones and teeth
And promotes calcium storage in the kidneys
