*Adrenal Gland Flashcards
What are the two parts of the adrenal gland
Medulla and cortex
What two hormones are produced in the medulla adrenal gland?
Adrenalin
Noradrenaline
(Have the same effects)
What is another name for adrenalin?
Epinephrine
What is another name for noradrenaline?
Norepinephrine
What two hormones does the cortex of the adrenal gland produce?
Aldosterone
Cortisol
What does aldosterone help maintain?
Water balance
How does aldosterone help maintain water balance?
Increases water reabsorption in kidneys –> increase the amount of Na pumped out of the nephron –> creates a larger concentration fading which draws out more water
Dehydration causes ______ blood pressure.
Low
When low blood pressure occurs, what cascade occurs?
Low blood pressure –> detected by baroreceptors in kidneys –> kidneys release renin –> activates angiotensinogen –> becomes angiotensin –> either causes vasoconstriction or stimulates the adrenal gland which releases aldosterone
What is vasoconstriction?
The tightening of veins –> smaller passageway –> increase in blood pressure
What is renin?
A blood protein
What is cortisol?
Stress hormone
What does cortisol stimulate?
The liver to release glucose into the blood stream by breaking down fat and protein
Why does cortisol suppress the immune system?
To decrease inflammation
Where is the adrenal gland located?
On top of the kidneys
