Q

What are the 4 characteristics of a hormone?

A

Produced by specialized cells
Produced in small amounts
Are generally (there are exceptions) produced by one cell and effect another cell
Effect metabolic pathways

15
Q

How does a protein hormone work?

3 steps

A

These hormones bind with the receptor site (intrinsic protein) outside of the cell which changes the protein shape and starts a metabolic pathway

16
Q

What does the metabolic pathway initiated by the protein hormone activate?

A

Activates kinase activity

17
Q

What is a protein kinase?

A

A catalyst which alters, decreases, or increases protein function

18
Q

How does a steroid hormone work? (4 steps)

A

Enters the cell and binds to steroid receptor molecules in the cytoplasm. This allows the steroid to get into the nucleus and activate the DNA which starts making specific proteins

19
Q

What do steroid hormones end in?

A

“one”

20
Q

Define target hormone

A

Targets a specific cell

21
Q

Define non-target hormone

A

Targets all cells within an organism

22
Q

Define tropic hormone

A

A hormone that stimulates a gland

23
Q

Define non-tropic hormone

A

A hormone that does not effect a gland

24
Q

How does feedback effect a hormone

A

Hormone levels are regulated by feedback

25
Q

What are two types of feedback

A

Positive

Negative

26
Q

What is positive feedback?

A

Tells your body to keep doing what it’s doing

27
Q

What is negative feedback?

A

Tells your body to stop doing what it’s doing

28
Q

Is feedback mostly positive or negative?

A

Negative

-> Used to control production

29
Q

What are similarities between the endocrine system and the nervous system? (4)

A

Control cells in body
Maintains homeostasis
Some hormones act as neurotransmitters and vice versa
Both neurotransmitters and hormones are chemical signals

30
Q

What are differences between the endocrine system and the nervous system? (4)

A

Nervous system is a lot faster than endocrine system
Hormones are released into bloodstream
No action potentials in endocrine system
Hormones last longer (long duration)
