Thyroid Function Flashcards
What is the hormonal control of thyroid glands?
Thyrotropin-releasing hormone in the hypothalamus causes the release of TSH in the pituitary
TSH binds to receptors and stimulates the release of T3 and T4
What hormones does the thyroid produce?
All T4, but only 10 to 40% of T3
What is most T3 produced by?
Other cells throughout the body by deinodination of T4
What inhibits the production of TSH?
T3
What is the synthesis of T3 and T4 influenced by?
Availability of iodide, sensitivit to TSH, and ratio T3:T4
What is thyroglobulin produced by?
Luminal thyroid cells
What is thyroglobulin stored in?
Follicular lumina
What are most T4 and T3 like in blood?
Protein bound
What are T4 and T3 that are not bound to proteins called?
Free T4 and free T3
What is the biologically active form of T4?
fT4
Which is more potent, fT3 or fT4?
fT3 is 3-5 times more potent
What happens when T4 and T3 enter cells and bind to receptors?
Increase metabolic rate Increased O2 consumption Increased HR Ehnaced response to catecholamines Bone formation and resorption Increased catabolism of muscle and adipose tissue Protein synthesis Erythropoiesis Changes in lipoprotein metabolsim
What are T4 and T3 excreted in?
Bile and urine
What sample is needed for canine T4 and T3?
EDTA plasma or serum
What species is fT4 lower in?
Much lower in dogs than cats, horses, and humans
