Definition of Thyroid
A
A large ductless gland in the neck which secretes hormones that regulate growth and development through to rate of metabolism. They do this by taking iodine from foods and converting it into Thyroxine which is then released into the blood.

Physiological Changes in Pregnancy
A
- Reduction in TSH in early pregnancy
- Thyroxine increases due to weak thyroid stimulating effect of HCG
- Basal metabolic rate increases from 4 months gestation

Hyperthyroidism
A
Defined as an over-active thyroid. (The thyroid produces too much thyroxine).
