T4 (thyroxine) & T3 (triiodothyronine)

A

Increases metabolism, needs iodine to work

Increased O2 consumption and metabolic rate, accelerate carbohydrate/lipid and protein metabolism, promote normal GI tract/cardiovascular/reproduction and temp regulation, increased sensitivity to SNS, promote growth and development, required for normal CNS functioning

Replacement drugs- thyroxine (T4) and liothyronine (T3)- more potent and shorter half life, not for pregnant women or children

Suppression drugs- carbimazole/propylthiouracil, radioactive iodine (lrg amounts suppress TRH & TSH)
