Thyroid Flashcards
1
Q
T4 (thyroxine) & T3 (triiodothyronine)
A
Increases metabolism, needs iodine to work
Increased O2 consumption and metabolic rate, accelerate carbohydrate/lipid and protein metabolism, promote normal GI tract/cardiovascular/reproduction and temp regulation, increased sensitivity to SNS, promote growth and development, required for normal CNS functioning
Replacement drugs- thyroxine (T4) and liothyronine (T3)- more potent and shorter half life, not for pregnant women or children
Suppression drugs- carbimazole/propylthiouracil, radioactive iodine (lrg amounts suppress TRH & TSH)
2
Q
Calcitonin
A
Decreases excess calcium, slowing calcium releasing activity of bone
