Posterior Pituitary Flashcards
1
Q
ADH (vasopressin)
A
Released in response to increased sodium levels.
Activated vasopressin receptors and increases permeability of renal distal tubules creating water reabsorption Decreases urine, smooth muscle contraction, platelet aggregation, raised factor VIII levels (used in haemorrhage management) increased release of ACTH and hydrocortisone
Released in response to hyper osmolality and suppressed with hypo osmolality (monitored by osmoreceptors in hypothalamus)
2
Q
Oxytocin
A
Contracts smooth muscle in reproductive organs
Induces milk ejection
Carbetocin- used for postpartum uterine contraction
