Anterior Pituitary Flashcards
Growth hormone
Stimulates cells to increase protein production and stimulates epiphyseal in long bones, promotes use of fat for energy
Released pulsitile during sleep
Decreases insulin sensitivity, increases lipolysis, promotes cellular growth through retention of phosphorus, potassium and sodium, enhances protein synthesis through increased nitrogen retention
Somatropin increases GH & octretide inhibits GH
Prolactin
Breast milk production, breast tissue in preg, suppresses gonadotrophin release and ovulation suppression
Stimulus for release- breast feeding, oestrogens, dopamine antagonists and thyrotrophin-releasing hormone
Inhibited by dopamine agonists like cabergoline
Thyroid stimulating hormone
Stimulate release of thyroid hormone from thyroid gland
Increases utilisation of glucose and oxygen, increase blood flow to thyroid gland, iodide trapping by gland, increase iodination of thyroglobulin (increased hormone synthesis), increased proteolysis of thyroglobulin (release of hormone)
Gonadotrophin hormones
Lutenizing hormone & follicle stimulating hormone
Stimulate ovaries and tested, development of follicles
