Thromboembolic disorder Flashcards
What is the normal blood clotting mechanism?
Haemostasis= physiological response for prevention/stopping bleeding
Constriction of blood vessels
Aggregation of platelets
Blood clotting
What changes occur in the homeostatic system during pregnancy?
Increased cardiac output and increased blood plasma
Define dissemination intravascular coagulation
When blood clots form through the body, blocking blood vessels
What causes DIC?
Placenta abruption, hemorrhage, pre-eclampsia, sepsis, ruptured uterus and amniotic fluid embolism
What are some complications of DIC?
Renal failure, liver failure and brain damage
Define thrombophilia
An abnormality of blood coagulation increasing the risk of thrombosis
What are the complications of thrombophilia?
Increased risk of placenta abruption and increased risk of pre-eclampsia
How do you manage thrombophilia?
Assess risk, consultant led care, TEDs and women self inject
Define Von Willibrand’s disease
A defect or deficiency of clotting factors in pregnancy
What screening tests are used for VWD?
FBC, serum ferritin, clotting screen and platelet aggregation test
What is the management for VWD?
Early identification, APH risk, G+s X2, vigilant postnatal care, check neonatal bleeding
Define Deep vein thrombosis
A blood clot in one of the deep veins of the leg
What are the risk factors for DVT?
Thrombophlia, obesity, smoking, immobility or dehydration
What are symptoms of DVT?
Pain, swelling, redness and pyrexia
What is the treatment of DVT?
IV heparin (hemorrhage and ski reaction) and TEDs
