Define a caesarean section
An operative procedure done under anesthesia, whereby the fetus, placenta and membranes are delivered through an incision made in the abdominal wall and uterus
What are the different categories of EMCS (define them)?
1= immediate threat to life 2= maternal or fetal compromise but no immediate threat to life 3= no compromise but needs early delivery 4= to suit women and staff
What preparation is needed for an EMCS?
Discussion and informed consent, Documentation, FBC and G+S, antibiotic prophylaxis, prep theatre, skin cleaned and prep
What people are present at an EMCS?
Surgeon, anesthetist, scrub nurse, receiving midwife, Pads, ODP, partner (possibly)
What are the risks of EMCS?
Increased VTE, infection, blood loss, tiredness, pain and psychological
What neonatal care is required post EMCS?
Resuscitation?, umbilical artery PH, Skin to skin
What postnatal care is needed post EMCS?
Post op obs, pain relief, bladder care, breastfeeding support
