thrombocytes Flashcards
how is a blood clot formed?
when an injury first occurs, a temporary clot forms where platelets gather and release substancea that attract other platelets, that become sticky and form a platelet plug. after a more permanent blood clot, consisting of a mesh of fibrin threads with trapped blood cells subsequently develops
how do blood clots help the body?
blood clots defend the body by preventing excessive blood loss, and entry of bacteria through the wound
how do platelets release fibrin threads?
damanged tissue platelets release thrombokinase, which converts inactive prothrombin into thrombin via calcium ions. thrombin converts soluble fibrinogen to insolubke fibrin threads
