Thought and Language Flashcards
Mental Sets
The tendency to continue using the same problem solivng that has worked in the past
Example of Representative Heuristic
Someone dresses essentricly and is reading, assumes they must be a poet
Heuristics
Cognitive shortcuts or rule of thumbs
Representative Heuristic
Categorising a subject or object through similarity to an assumed prototype, regardless of the probability of it occuring
Pros n cons of heuristics
Allows rapid judgement but can lead to flawed responses
Availablity Heuristics
Judging the likelihood of something happening based off of how easily imagined the information is (Recency and vividness)
Example of Availability Heuristic
Thinking that these are typical and common. Seeing a plane crash recently, thinking that its common for crashes to occur and fearing flying.
Confirmation Bias
Tendency to search for, interprate or prefer information that support previous beliefs or values
3 problem solving strategies
Algorithms, heuristics, and trial n error
Functional Fixedness
Seeing only one solution to an issue. e.g. Screwdrivers to screw rather than trying out a pen
