Biological Basis of Behaviour Flashcards
Central Nervous System
Brain and the spinal chord
Role of Neurons
Carry information to each other
What is the Nervous system?
Interacting network of nerve cells thats the underlying basis of all biological activity
Peripheral Nervous System
Made up of neurons and ganglia (clusters), sends messages from body to the CNS
Neurons made of?
Cell body (Nucleus), dendrite (branches), Axon (Tail), myelin sheath (protective)
Endocrine System
Collection of glands that controls bodily functions through secrete hormones into the blood stream
What is a neurotransmitter?
Chemicals that allow neurons to communicate with each other.
Sensory Neuron
Transmit msg’s from receptors (sensory cells) to the brain. about sensation eg. sore throat
Interneuron
Nerves that connect diff. neurons to each other, Only in the CNS (CNS motor neuron to a sensory neuron)
Motor/efferent neurons
Transmit commands from interneurons to the glands and muscles of the body. Voluntary (grabbing a cup) and involuntary (digestion) -efferant away
Autonomic nervous system
Basic life functions, like breathing. automatic functions
Somatic Nervous System
Conveys sensory information to CNS and controls muscles. Voluntary movements
Parasympathetic Nervous System
Rest and digest, calms the body down
Sympathetic nervous system
Activates the body, fight or flight
Frontal Lobe, position and purpose
Behind the forehead. Starting and co-ordinating motor movements. Higher cognitive skills: Thinking, problem solving
