Thorax 1 Flashcards
Where does the clavicle articulate with the manubrium?
At the manubriums superolateral angles (sternoclavicular joint)
What kind of joint is the sternoclavicular?
Synovial Plane
At what vertebral level is the xiphoid process?
T9 (T6 dermatome)
With what does the second costal cartilage articulate?
The manubrium and body of the sternum (i.e. at the sternal angle)
What are the features of a typical rib?
Rounded superior border vs sharp inferior border
Head (for articulating with vertebrae) then neck then tubercle
Angle
Costal groove on inner surface
Pit for costal cartilage
With what vertebrae does the head articulate
With the bodies of the same number vertebra and the one above. (so rib 7 with vertebrae 6 & 7)
With what does the rib tubercle articulate?
The transverse process of the same numbered vertebra
What is int he costal grooves?
The intercostal neurovascular bundle (Nerve and vessels)
Which ribs are true ribs and what are they called?
Vertebrosternal Ribs 1-7
Which ribs are false ribs and what are they called?
Vertebrochondral Ribs 8-10
Which ribs are floating ribs?
Vertebral Ribs 11-12
Whats different about the first rib?
Its wider/flatter and articulates with just T1 vertebra.
Presecne of posterior and anterior grooves
Presence of scalene tubercle seperating the grooves
What passes through the posterior and anterior grooves on the first rib?
Anterior = Subclavian Vein Posterior = Subclavian Artery & lowest trunk of brachial plexus
What attaches to the scalene tubercle?
The anterior scalene muscle (a respiratory accessory)
What are the facets which articulate witht he rib head called?
Demi-facets
