Thoracic Wall Movement Flashcards

Q
How is expiration accomplished? Active? Passive?
A
Active: assisted by abdominal wall muscle contraction
–increases the abdominal cavity pressure pushing diaphragm up
Passive: Accomplished by muscle relaxation and the elastic recoil of the lungs

Q
How is inspiration accomplished? Active? Resting?
A
Muscular contraction, mainly by diaphragm
Active: assisted by scalene, and pectoral girdle mm
Passive: assisted by the intercostal mm
2
Q
What are the dimensional changes of the thoracic in breathing
A
Vertical: increases as diaphragm contracts and lowers
Transverse: increases as ribs rise–bucket handle
AP Diameter: increases movement at costovertebral joint–pump handle
