Thoracic Cage (Ribs) Flashcards
What does the thorax consist of?
12 thoracic vertebrae (and IVD)
12 pairs of ribs
The sternum
Where do the vertebrae articulate with the ribs?
Costal Demi-facets on vertebral body articulate with head of ribs.
Costal facets on TVPs articulate with tubercle on ribs
The top of the manubrium is called the …?
Jugular (aka sternal) notch.
On the manubrium what is on either side of the jugular notch?
Articular facet (clavicle notch) where manubrium articulates with clavicle
What in the sternum is the landmark for rib 2?
Sternal angle (aka angle of Louis). Manubriosternal joint
What is along the side of the body of the sternum?
Costal notches for articulation with costal cartilage
What is the name of the thin process inferior to the body? At what age does it ossify?
Xiphoid process
Age 40
Which ribs are ‘true ribs’?
Ribs 1-7. Have direct connection with sternum via their own costal cartilage
Which ribs are ‘false ribs’?
Ribs 8-12 - they connect with sternum via rib 7 costal cartilage)
Which ribs are floating ribs?
Ribs 11 and 12. Unattached anteriorly
Which ribs are typical ribs?
Ribs 2-10
What is on the head of the ribs? What do they articulate with?
2 facets (superior and inferior) articulate with the vertebral bodies above and below
Where does the articular facet on the tubercle of the rib articulate with?
TVP of vertebrae
What is the angle of the rib?
Where the ribs change from travelling inferiority and posteriorly and laterally begins to travel forward.
What is the costal groove for on the ribs?
For the costal nerve
