Thoracic Athrology Flashcards
What are costal cartilages?
Connect the anterior portion of the ribs to the sternum
1st-7th (individually connect ribs to the sternum)
8th-10th (articulate with the costal cartilages superior to them before articulating with the sternum)
What are the three types of joins?
Synovial joint (diathrosis; united by an articular capsule) Fibrous joint (synarthrosis; united by fibrous tissue) Cartilaginous joint (amphiarthrosis; united by hyaline cartilage or fibrous cartilage)
Describe the manubriosternal joint
Symphysis joint between sternal angle of Louis and 2nd costal notch
Describe the xiphisternal joint
Synchondrosis joint between inferior limit of the thorax and 7th costal notch
What is the 1st sternocostal joint?
Synchondrosis joint of rib 1
Describe the sternocostal joint of ribs 2-7
Synovial planar joint
Held together by anterior and posterior radiate sternocostal L
Describe the costovertebral joint
Synovial planar
Contains the radiate L (rib to vertebral body) and intraarticular L (rib to the IV disc) + Articular capsule (strongest anteriorly as the radiate L)
The head of each rib articulates with what?
The inferior costal facet of the superior numeric thoracic vertebral segment and the superior costal facet of the same numeric thoracic vertebral segment
The articulating facet of the costal tubercle articulates with what?
The same numeric thoracic vertebral segment
Describe the costotransverse joint
Synovial planar
Includes lateral costotransverse (tubercle of rib to TP) and superior costotransverse L (neck of rib to TP one vertebral segment superior)
What are the two forms of movement that occur at the costovertebral joint?
Bucket handle and pump handle movement
Both function to increase the thoracic volume thereby decreasing thoracic pressure producing inspiration
What is bucket handle movement?
Elevation of the lateral most portion of the rib increasing the transverse diameter of the thorax
What is the pump handle movement?
Elevation of the sternal end of the rib increasing the anterior to posterior diameter of the thorax
What is the costochondral joint?
Articulation between the ribs and costal cartilages
Synchondrosis joint
Dislocation of the ribs refers to a dislocation at the what?
Sternocostal joint
