Thoracic Athrology Flashcards

1
Q

What are costal cartilages?

A

Connect the anterior portion of the ribs to the sternum
1st-7th (individually connect ribs to the sternum)
8th-10th (articulate with the costal cartilages superior to them before articulating with the sternum)

Q

What are the three types of joins?

A
Synovial joint (diathrosis; united by an articular capsule)
Fibrous joint (synarthrosis; united by fibrous tissue)
Cartilaginous joint (amphiarthrosis; united by hyaline cartilage or fibrous cartilage)

Q

Describe the costovertebral joint

A

Synovial planar
Contains the radiate L (rib to vertebral body) and intraarticular L (rib to the IV disc) + Articular capsule (strongest anteriorly as the radiate L)

Q

Describe the costotransverse joint

A

Synovial planar
Includes lateral costotransverse (tubercle of rib to TP) and superior costotransverse L (neck of rib to TP one vertebral segment superior)

Q

What are the two forms of movement that occur at the costovertebral joint?

A

Bucket handle and pump handle movement

Both function to increase the thoracic volume thereby decreasing thoracic pressure producing inspiration

Q

Describe the interchondral joint

A

Between 6-7th, 7-8th, 8-9th costal cartilages - Planar synovial
Between 9th and 10th it is a fibrous joint
Strengthened by the interchondral L
