Q
Thoracic injuries can have a massive impact on 3 main areas?
A
- Cardiac output - haemorrhage, cardiac temponade, vascular disruption
- Ventilation Efficiency - chest expansion compromise, bleeding into the pleural space, damage to the diaphragm
- Impairment to gas exchange - full or partial lung collapse, pulmonary contusion, respiratory tract disruption

Q
What’s is flail chest, why is it life threatening
A
2 or more broken ribs in 2 or more places = free floating segment of chest wall
The amount of force to brake the ribs is significant enough to cause damage to underlying organs/structures altering the effectiveness of respirations
