Colors on a topographic map?
contour lines - brown water features - blue vegetation - green culture - black other "artificial" features - red revisions - purple
Rules for contour lines?
- close
- never cross except at overhanging walls
- show a “v” pattern in presence of stream, pointing upstream at the apex
- widely spaced=gentle slopes
- closely spaced=steep slopes
- closed circular or oval=rifge or hill
- closed circular with hachures= depression
- specific elevations show an “x” also called a benchmark
- every 5th contour =index contour and is bolder than the rest
- contour interval= distance between adjacent contour lines
- relief= distance between two elevations
Difference between true north and magnetic north?
True north-geographic north
mag. north- compass direction as a result of Earth’s magnetic field
How to calculate relief?
The difference in elevation between two points. It is easily calculated by subtracting the lowest elevation from the highest elevation in an area.
What three things must go on a topographic map?
title, north arrow (2 types), scale (3 types)
Three different types of scales?
Fractional, graphical, verbal
How are latitude and longitude shown on a map?
Latitude lines run horizontally on a map.
The vertical lines on a map are called longitude lines, also known as meridians.
