definitions and examples for test #4 Flashcards

1
Q

Definition of Solar System?

A

The sun together with all the planets and other bodies that revolve around it. a similar system with celestial bodies revolving around a star other than the sun.
EX: 1 star = the sun
8 planets, in distance to the sun from closest to farthest = Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

Q

Definition of orbit?

A

An orbit is a regular, repeating path that one object in space takes around another one.
EX: The path or Earth takes around the Sun is an example of an orbit.

Q

Definition of prograde motion?

A

Having a rotational or orbital movement that is the same as most bodies within a celestial system. (Prograde or direct motion is more normal motion in the same direction )
EX: planets move west-to-east through the stars at night

Q

Definition of retrograde motion?

A

Retrograde motion in astronomy is, in general, orbital or rotational motion of an object in the direction opposite the rotation of its primary, that is, the central object. Basically when something moves in a “counterclockwise” motion.
EX: when you pass a car on the freeway, the car being passed appears to move backward relative to you.

A

A small body of matter from outer space that comes into the atmosphere of the Earth .
EX: A shooting star caused by a small object from outer space entering the earth’s atmosphere.

Q

Definition of meteorite?

A

A solid piece of debris from an object, such as a comet, asteroid, or meteoroid, that originates in outer space and survives its passage through the atmosphere to reach the surface of a planet or moon.
EX: The Allende Meteorite fell to Earth in a fireball on February 8, 1969

17
Q

Definition of craters?

A

A bowl-shaped depression, or hollowed-out area, produced by the impact of a meteorite, volcanic activity, or an explosion.
EX: The holes on the moon’s surface.

18
Q

Definition of planetesimal?

A

Solid bodies hundreds of kilometers in diameter that merged to form the planets.
EX: One of Saturn’s 53 moons, Phoebe.

19
Q

Definition of dwarf planet?

A

A spherical celestial body revolving about the sun, similar to a planet but not large enough to gravitationally clear its orbital region of most or all other celestial bodies.
EX: Pluto.

20
Q

Definition of asteroid?

A

Small, rocky objects that orbit the Sun.

EX: Pallas – a huge 544-kilometre asteroid.

21
Q

Definition of asteroid belt?

A

A region of our solar system – between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter – in which many small bodies orbit our sun.

22
Q

Definition of meteoroid?

A

A small body moving in the solar system that would become a meteor if it entered the earth’s atmosphere.
EX: Some meteoroids are fragments from bodies such as Mars or our moon, that have been thrown into space by an impact.
